Hurricane Prep Diagram

It can be hard to get things together when there’s a hurricane on its way, but at Florida’s Best Public Adjusters we know preparation is key to keeping your home and family safe. There are some important preparation steps you can take to make sure you’ve done everything in your power to minimize any potential hurricane damage. If you’re a little rusty on hurricane preparedness tips, take a few minutes to brush up on proper preparation measures. There are some important steps to take before a hurricane, here are the top 7:

  1. Save important contact information. If your property sustains damage during a hurricane, you might not know who to call when it’s time for repairs. Be sure that you have the necessary emergency family contacts and services saved on your phone.
  2. Check your home’s risk zone. If your home is in an evacuation zone and the authorities are recommending evacuation, it may be in your best interests to vacate your home during the hurricane. If you do evacuate, it’s important to make sure that your home is secure.
  3. Secure your windows and doors. The weakest points of your home during a hurricane are your windows and doors. Make sure that your windows are covered with adequate shutters to prevent damage.
  4. Remove potential debris. Does your home have outdoor accessories or trees with loose or dead branches? Bring all outdoor furniture and equipment indoors. Additionally, remove any loose branches from your trees so they do not become flying hazards during the hurricane.
  5. Stock up on necessary medication. If you or a member of your family depends on prescription medication, make sure you have enough medicine on hand to cover at least three days following a hurricane.
  6. Build a supply kit. Properly supplying your home during a hurricane is crucial to keeping everyone safe. Be sure to equip your home with at least three days of non-perishable items, a first aid kit, and a gallon of clean water per person per day. You should also include batteries and solar-powered cell phone chargers in your kit. To view the full list of basic disaster supplies, visit http://www.ready.gov/kit
  7. Photograph your property. Take photographs of your home and your personal property before the hurricane. If any damage is sustained, you will have documentation of your property’s condition before the hurricane passed through.

When there’s a hurricane heading your way, it can be too easy to fall into a panic. It’s important to remember that with the right preparations and precautions, you can weather out the hurricane. It’s important to prepare in advance of the hurricane to ensure your family and your home’s safety. Above all else, we encourage your family to stay safe.
